The Galapagos Islands Ecuador
The Galapagos islands have been named the best site for wildlife tourism in the world by the BBC. The archipelago has also been awarded other distinctions. It has been named a world natural heritage site by UNESCO as well as a whale sanctuary. It houses the Santa Clara island Wildlife Refuge and the Charles Darwin Research Foundation. The foundation was established in 1959 by the Ecuadorian government and financed by UNESCO and they are in charge of both, the protection and scientific investigation of this area, the largest and most highly visited National Park of Ecuador.
The islands, named for a Spanish riding saddle are located 600 miles West of the continent on the equator.
